The oxidative coupling of sp3 hybridized carbon atoms by photocatalysis is a valuable synthetic method as stoichiometric oxidation reagents can be avoided and dihydrogen is the only byproduct of the reaction. Cadmium sulfide, a readily available semiconductor, was used as a visible light heterogeneous photocatalyst for the oxidative coupling of benzyl alcohols and benzyl amines by irradiation with blue light. Depending on the structure of the starting material, good to excellent yields of homocoupling products were obtained as mixtures of diastereomers. Cross-coupling between benzyl alcohols and benzyl amines gave product mixtures, but was selective for the coupling of tetrahydroisoquinolines to nitromethane. The results demonstrate that CdS is a suitable visible light photocatalyst for oxidative bond formation under anaerobic conditions.

Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO), an inexpensive, environment-friendly, and metal-free carbocatalyst, used for the N-formylation of amines is developed. In this reaction, GO shows good activity, selectivity, and recyclability. This strategy has an array of advantages, such as being metal free, without additive, wide-scope protocol, scalable with a low catalyst loading of 3 wt%, use of readily available and recyclable carbocatalyst, and DMF as a readily available formyl source. The transformation of light into chemical energy is a leitmotiv in the development of sustainable and environmentally concerned chemical processes. Chemists invented original concepts to address this purpose, like photoredox catalysis, which became a wonderful tool to transform simple organic compounds into high-value products. Nevertheless, the most relevant transition metal based photocatalysts suffer from major disadvantages like toxicity, cost, and poor recyclability potential. To circumvent this, we propose a new generation of heterogeneous photoredox catalysts resulting from the combination of porous silica materials and Rose Bengal. They promote carbon?carbon bond formations under visible-light in environmentally benign solvent using air as the only stoichiometric redox partner. The pure covalent photocatalytic system provides a robust and recyclable system for greener catalysis. This report would be of broad significance because it addresses important sustainability issues: recycling, non-toxic metal-free photocatalysts, and less-waste-producing chemical process.
