In order to achieve reproducibility during iridium-photoredox and nickel dual-catalyzed sp3-sp2 carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions, we investigated the role that molecular oxygen (O2), solvent and light-source (CF lamp or blue LED) play in a variety of Ir-photoredox mediated transformations. The presence of O2 was discovered to be important for catalyst activation when air-stable Ni(II) precatalysts were used in DMF under CF lamp irradiation; however, O2 was not required for catalysis when conducted with Ni(COD)2 in the same reaction system. O2 is believed to promote rapid reduction of the Ni(II) precatalyst by Ir(II) to Ni(0). In addition to O2, the effects that solvent and light-source have on the dual-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling reactions will be discussed. These findings have enabled us to develop a more robust dual-catalyzed decarboxylative cross-coupling protocol.

The rational assembly of these two inorganic connectors and organic linear linkers leads to the formation of the two complexes here. To the best of our knowledge, they appear to be the first 3D frameworks constructed from decanuclear hydroxo lanthanide clusters. From the topological point of view, these compounds represent an intriguing example of a binodal (8,14)-connected net considering the Ln 10 and Cu16 connectors as the nodes, revealing that they are typical high dimensional frameworks with high connected net based on high nuclearity nodes. Furthermore, elemental analysis, IR, TGA, PXRD, and UV-vis properties are also studied.

As an extension of the successful dicyanopyrazine photoredox catalysts, a series of X-shaped push-pull molecules with a systematically altered structure were designed and facilely synthesized; their structure-property relationship was elucidated in detail via experimental as well as theoretical calculations. Dicyanopyrazines are proven to be powerful photoredox catalysts with a push-pull arrangement that allows facile property tuning by interchanging a particular part of the D-pi-A system. Changing the mutual position of the cyano acceptors and the methoxy, methylthio and thienyl donors as well as modifying the linker allowed wide tuning of the fundamental properties of the catalysts. Contrary to the currently available organic photoredox catalysts, we provided a series of catalysts based on a pyrazine heterocyclic scaffold with easy synthesis and further modification, diverse photoredox characteristics and wide application potential across modern photoredox transformations. The photoredox catalytic activities of the target catalysts were examined in a benchmark cross-dehydrogenative coupling and novel and challenging annulation reactions.

A series of isoquinolines, N-methyl-1,2-dihydroisoquinolines, N-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines, and N-methylisoquinolinium ions were tested as inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A and B. As a class, the N-methylisoquinolinium ions were found to be the most active MAO-A inhibitors, with N-methyl-6-methoxyisoquinolinium ion emerging as a potent (IC50 = 0.81 muM) and competitive MAO-A inhibitor. Comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA, a 3-D-QSAR method) of MAO-A inhibition was performed using the data reported here and in the literature. Using the steric and lipophilic fields of the inhibitors, quantitative models with reasonable predictive power were obtained that point to the importance of steric, lipophilic, and polar interactions in modulating MAO-A inhibitory activity.

Both the ionic liquid and copper catalyst were recycled nine times with almost no lost of activity. The electrochemical behavior of the tertiary amine substrate and beta-nitroamine product was investigated employing [BMIm][BF4] as electrolyte solvent. The potentiostatic electrolysis in ionic liquid afforded the desired product with a high yield. This result and the cyclic voltammetric investigation provide a better understanding of the reaction mechanism, which involves radical and iminium cation intermediates.

Plants activate different defense systems to counteract the attack of microbial pathogens. Among them, the recognition of conserved microbial- or pathogen-Associated molecular patterns (MAMPs or PAMPs) by pattern-recognition receptors stimulates MAMP- or PAMP-Triggered immunity (PTI). In recent years, the elicitors, receptors, and signaling pathways leading to PTI have been extensively studied. However, the contribution of organelles to this program deserves further characterization. Here, we studied how processes altering the mitochondrial electron transport chain (mETC) influence PTI establishment. With particular emphasis, we evaluated the effect of proline dehydrogenase (ProDH), an enzyme that can load electrons into the mETC and regulate the cellular redox state. We found that mETC uncouplers (antimycin or rotenone) and manganese superoxide dismutase deficiency impair flg22-induced responses such as accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and bacterial growth limitation. ProDH mutants also reduce these defenses, decreasing callose deposition as well. Using ProDH inhibitors and ProDH inducers (exogenous Pro treatment), we showed that this enzyme modulates the generation of ROS by the plasma membrane respiratory burst NADPH oxidase homolog D. In this way, we contribute to the understanding of mitochondrial activities influencing early and late PTI responses and the coordination of the redox-Associated mitochondrial enzyme ProDH with defense events initiated at the plasma membrane.
